There is no responsible single “best” light for every planted aquarium. A shallow tank of slow-growing Anubias and Java fern presents a different job from a deep aquascape with a dense carpet, injected CO₂ and frequent fertilising. The useful buying question is therefore: which exact fixture and size can provide controllable, even light for this tank and this planting plan?

“Low-tech” does not mean no planning. It normally means that plant choice, growth rate and light demand are kept modest, often without injected CO₂. Stronger light raises the system’s demand for available carbon and nutrients. If those inputs cannot keep pace, turning the light up further is unlikely to fix poor growth and can make an imbalance more visible.

A shortlist is only the start. The Fluval’s app, the Interpet’s retrofit hardware, the Aquael’s open-tank form and the Hygger’s built-in modes solve different practical problems. Eliminate anything that does not physically fit before comparing control features. If a seller cannot identify the exact size or model code, do not transfer figures from another member of the range.
Compare current UK price like for like
A useful price comparison must name the exact length and power variant, the UK retailer, the observation date, stock state and whether delivery is included. Also record anything needed to obtain the advertised controls, such as a separate controller, suspension kit or adaptor. PAR at plant level is commonly reported as photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD), but the number changes with distance, water, optics, output setting and position. - the exact brand, model, length and power variant;
- whether the reading was taken in air or through water;
- the distance from the light and the water depth;
- the brightness and colour-channel settings;
- the meter or sensor used;
- centre, edge and corner readings rather than one peak value; and
- the mounting hardware and any lid or cover between light and water.
If those conditions are missing, label the result “not comparable” rather than converting watts, lumens or Kelvin into an estimated PAR value. A map from a larger version of the same product is not evidence for a smaller version. Likewise, a dry bench reading at a short distance is not automatically the light level at the substrate of a filled aquarium.
Measure the aquarium before choosing a size
- Measure the outside glass length. Compare it with the manufacturer’s application range, not the nominal tank volume.
- Measure front-to-back planting width. A narrow bar may fit the length yet leave foreground or background plants poorly covered.
- Measure water depth to the substrate. Use the deepest planted area, allowing for raised hardscape and sloping substrate.
- Inspect the top. Record rim thickness, braces, hood openings, feeding flaps and where a clip or extendable leg can safely sit.
- Decide the mounting height. Raising a light can improve spread while reducing intensity at plant level; use evidence for the actual height.
- Check the controller route. Make sure controls and connections can remain dry and accessible without pinching a cable.

Controls that matter after installation
Dimming is more useful than an impressive maximum when a new light is stronger than the old one. A repeatable timer helps keep duration consistent. Separate channels can alter appearance, but extra colour controls do not replace measured intensity or good distribution. App control may be convenient, yet it also creates a phone, software and pairing dependency; check whether essential scheduling can still be operated if the app or connection is unavailable.
Ask what happens after a power cut. “Remembers settings” may mean stored channel values while the clock itself resets. Check the current supplied manual for the exact model rather than assuming every light in a brand behaves alike. This is especially important if the aquarium is unattended or the light is placed behind a separate plug timer.

Only a map or measurement for the exact fixture, variant, intensity, mounting height, water depth and tank position can answer that. If a seller publishes none of those conditions, treat substrate PAR as unknown rather than estimating it from watts or lumens.
Do I need CO₂ for a planted tank?
Not for every planted tank. Low-demand plants can be kept in balanced low-tech systems, but stronger light raises carbon and nutrient demand. For demanding carpets or red stems, choose light only as part of a plan that can supply stable CO₂ and nutrients.
How long should a planted-aquarium photoperiod be?
There is no universal hour target for every planted aquarium. Start with a conservative, repeatable schedule consistent with the plants and fixture instructions, keep intensity steady, then make one small change at a time in response to new growth, plant condition and algae.
Does full spectrum automatically mean good plant growth?
